Though I can’t tell if mascara hates me or I hate it more. Wearing mascara is great, and as someone who wears glasses daily, it’s nearly my only option. And after using it since middle school, I can safely say I’ve never found my forever mascara.
I’ve tried cheap, expensive, black, brown, big wand, little wand, volumizing, plumping, clump-free, top DPS… and they all seem to dry out in a few weeks and then it’s so hard to get a wand that doesn’t look like a pine cone dipped in tar.
Here’s some of the highlights I’ve tried throughout the years:
bareMinerals – Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara
This was one of the first expensive mascaras I had tried. It was a recommendation from my nail tech at the time because I was probably complaining about mascara. I really liked it at first and even tried the smaller detail tube in addition. I probably bought this one three times total but I felt like it didn’t stay wet long enough to justify the $20 price.
Buxom Lash Volumizing Mascara
I got this as a sample with one of those Buxom custom palettes back in the day. Even though I don’t normally like a wand with 50 trillion teeth on it I liked how this performed and got a full-size after the sample was kaput. It wasn’t the fastest to dry out, but it was still hard to justify the $22 price tag.
Tarte – Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara
The holy grail of eyelash products if you believe the many people who have said so. Another $20+ mascara and I really liked the formula and the short wand. It had a nice coat on the lashes, but the curling potential or staying power was not really there for me. I probably re-bought this once and got a decent life out of it, but I also tend to hang on to a tube like it’s Frostmourne and I hate the Scourge.
Before I’m accused of being some kind of mascara snob 😏, this was just one phase of The Mascara Trials that spans over a number of years. The under $10 options are going to be in part two…
